Het is alweer een behoorlijke tijd stil rondom mijn favoriete singersongwriter Fionn Regan… In april 2008 lazen de diehard Myspace bezoekers weliswaar dit bericht:
Fionn debuted one of his new album tracks “genocide matinee” at the 30th anniversary ‘rock against rasicm’ carnival in victoria park,(100,000 people in attendance) london yesterday
Fionn was invited to perform his song during drew mcconnells ‘helsinki’ set, and was backed by jamie morrison on drums, matt parke on lead guitar, stephan large ..s and drew mcconnell on bass.
Het liedje zelf kregen we niet te horen. Inmiddels wordt het hoog tijd voor een nieuw Fionn Regan album (vooral zodat hij dan gaat touren en ik hem eindelijk live kan zien). Vorige week zette Fionn Regan de eerste stap in de goede richting… Hij plaatste een nieuwe demo op Myspace, getiteld ‘Protection Racket’.
Het klinkt allemaal nog wat ruw, maar het liedje heeft zeker zijn charme. Hij combineert zijn eigen, vaak onbegrijpelijke teksten, met iets wat het beste kan worden omschreven als een hommage aan de vroegste rock ’n roll (voor nog zo’n recente hommage, zie ‘Richard Swift as Onasis’). Hoewel het nogal een ander geluid is dan op het door Fionn zelf geproduceerde debuutalbum ‘The End Of History’ (dat over het algemeen betoverend mooi klonk), kijk ik in ieder geval vol verwachting uit naar het nieuwe album. Wanneer dat ook moge verschijnen…
